Huey has always been an acquaintance of mine in the local community but it wasn't until I visited his barbershop that I realized there was a lot more to his business and his art than I had initially pinpointed. I had heard about his business multiple times through word of mouth and decided to give it a try. Being a male in central pa, I never had the experience of feeling at home while getting a haircut. From the rustic, yet clean look of the interior of the shop, to the vintage barber pole outside, Mansion Park Barber Shop had just the atmosphere I had always sought out. During his interview for season 1 of the "Grey Matters" mini-documentary series Huey touched on his past addictions, and how is son became his main catalyst for staying clean. Though not easy for anyone to talk about, he stayed humbly honest and saw it as an opportunity to deliver a heartfelt message that there is always more life coming out of any negative situation. I thought that I had a pretty good idea about the type of person Jamille Brown (Chillz) was. That was until I went digging. As always he showed up to the interview with nothing but good vibes surrounding him. Always positive, Chillz seemed to have just the enthusiasm that was needed for a killer interview. I knew the interview would have to be something more than a generic overview of him and his music, so I got specific. He surprised me with stories of humble beginnings of recording in a studio which had no running water, and how that drove his art to be what it is today. As I walked in, the store’s whole aesthetic was the epitome of vintage. When I met Ashlie McMullin she was initially one of the most laid back of all the subjects interviewed during the series. Her interview touched on her origins of interest regarding everything vintage. Working a 9-5 job for ten years eventually wore on her psyche and she decided to step out of the box and make a big change with the opening of Moonstruck Vintage Finds. This made my interview with him particularly easy regarding his backstory but there was information revealed within it that even I wasn’t able to squeeze out of him during our previous encounters. Chet touched on his motivation behind picking up a guitar and told the story of how losing the person closest to him (his mother) lit a fire under him and cleared his vision for future musical action. He talked about a dream, which catapulted his drive and enthusiasm for music. The first thing that is immediate when encountering Dion Brown is his passion for what he does. He started his personal training about a year ago and since posting photos of his first client’s before and after pictures, he has been flooded with new proteges seeking a healthier lifestyle. Though this is true, he stresses that it isn’t at all his responsibility to ensure success within his clients. Most of the weight (no pun intended) falls on his clients shoulders to make a serious change. He just supplies the motivation and directs them in diet and exercises to ensure incredible results. He started his journey in both hip-hop and in being a youth mentor after college wasn’t working out. Since then he has grown as an artist and now holds a place as one of the best lyricists in the city of Pittsburgh. Drawing inspiration from the energy of kids that he works around and from past experiences, Shad’s content is a direct reflection of his life. This, in my opinion, makes him not only a true artist but an role model for future generations to look up to.

Needless to say he was kind of exactly what I had expected based on his social media posts. An amazing artist in every respect of the word, Michael has spent his life perfecting and improving his many skills. I was suprised, however, to learn that he had previously studied under the tutelage of a Vietnamese buddhist monk. His work ethic, combined with his love for history and philosophy makes for a rather strange but fulfilling life, as he takes many out of the ordinary jobs. GREY MATTERS - Episode 8 - Jeremiah Witherspoon of Scorchin Boxing Gym For episode 8 I sat down with Scorchin’ Boxing’s Jeremiah Witherspoon for an in depth look at what peaked his interest in boxing in the first place. While trying out for professional football, he used boxing as an outlet for strength and conditioning training. Since then, he fell in love with the sport and everything it entails. Now, being a trainer and starting his own boxing gym, Jeremiah looks to the future and hopes to create an outlet for kids in the city to go to with aspirations of turning pro and living a fulfilling life. GREY MATTERS - Episode 9 -Altoona hip-hop artist IAMSLEEP I had known Steven Saint John (IAMSLEEP) ever since he started a three piece hip-hop group called “Three High” a couple years ago. The group had since dismantled and he became a solo artist. With initial aspirations of making the big time like “Mac Miller or Wiz Khalifa,” Stevey has now settled into a more artistic relationship with the music he makes. He mentions he doesn’t care nearly as much about fame and fortune, and puts music and message at the forefront of his motivation as an artist.
